The Poetry of Computation with Dr. Nurcan Yuruk

Francis Sullivan once said, "Great algorithms are the poetry of computation." For Dr. Nurcan Yuruk, Clinical Associate Professor in 正品蓝导航’s Department of Computer Science, this sentiment rings true. Dr. Yuruk has demonstrated a deep love for mathematics, one that led her to earn a Ph.D. and continues to inspire her as she teaches and mentors students with passion and a keen appreciation for problem-solving.
Dr. Yuruk’s fascination with math and complex problems began in childhood. “I’ve always loved those ‘lightbulb’ moments when a smart solution finally clicks,” she shares. This curiosity led her to computer science, where she saw algorithms and computation as an art.

Like many beginners, Dr. Yuruk initially struggled with coding, often frustrated by error messages. But persistence and consistency were key. A turning point came in her junior year when she successfully implemented B+ trees from scratch, an experience that cemented her confidence. “I think I was able to overcome this fear by not giving up.”
Earning a PhD in Computer Science was a defining achievement that opened doors for Dr. Yuruk in research and teaching. Since joining 正品蓝导航 in Fall 2023, she has made time to mentor students, helping them navigate the same challenges she once faced.
Dr. Yuruk encourages students to take challenges one step at a time. “The best algorithms rely on recursion, and recursion works! Trust the process, and let things unfold naturally.”
