Modeling and Computations for Complex Systems
NSF REU/RTG Site: Modeling and Computations for Complex Systems.
June 2 - July 25, 2025
Faculty Mentors: Alejandro Aceves and Joe Camp
Program Overview: This unique program will showcase students how engineering and mathematics (mathematics and engineering) go hand in hand when advancing our understanding and research on topics of current interest.
The program will begin with the SCALE Course, an immersive 3-week experience, followed by a 5-week immersion on the Mathematics Complex Systems. The aim is for participants to be equipped to develop projects in diverse areas of applications in science and engineering. A key component of this REU, is for the students to have the opportunity to engage in cutting-edge research and coursework in the related field of swarm coordination and autonomous learning.
Specific elements of the REU follow:
- SCALE Course (Taos, NM): From June 3rd to June 17th, students will participate in an 11-day course on Swarm Coordination and Autonomous Learning. The course will focus on hands-on learning of drone communications technology and artificial intelligence, with a special focus on real-world applications.
- Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) in Complex Systems (Dallas, TX): Following the SCALE course, students will continue their research on the general topic of complex systems for 5 weeks; from June 20th to July 25th.
In summary, during this period students will learn and contribute to ongoing research in swarm coordination, autonomous learning, and modeling complex systems.
Program Benefits:
- $5600 stipend
- Up to $850 travel reimbursement
- On-campus room and board included during both the Taos course and the Dallas REU portion
Eligibility:
- U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident
- Must not have completed your undergraduate degree before January 2025
- We encourage applications from women and other groups traditionally underrepresented in mathematics and engineering
- Ability to focus on this program during these 8 weeks
Application Deadline: April 20, 2025
